OK I'll attach the output of dmesg at the end. I had a look at /var/log/ messages and it is the same except for other messages by named and other daemons that looks perfectly normal. I did boot with -v just incase it gives some usefull extra info. There are no other messages to indicate an error except the "COMMAND FAILED" message. Tar just reports: "tar: can't write to /dev/nrst0 : Input/output error" > Not very likely. It seems like the data stops flowing long (like tens of seconds) before the error messages pops out.
