I got this completely wrong, though I have read the FAQ a few years ago. http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/misc.html#TOP-FREEMEM The values shown by top(1) labeled as Inact, Cache, and Buf are all cached data at different aging levels.
