To build eg. JDK 1.4.x, you need to use JDK 1.4.x to compile it. This Catch 22 situation is the only reason why you have to install a pre-compiled JDK, and the licensing situation being what it is, that means a Linux JDK. However, once the native JDK is installed, you can use that to install any updates to the JDK that happen to come along.
