Just wanted to clarify for Brenda's sake:

FreeBSD includes full source code on everything.

You can modify the the kernel source as you see fit, and compile it and
install it.  Or you can keep current by downloading the source from
freebsd.org as Julian said and do the same.  You don't just download a
a kernel (the binary file) and install it.
