You can do 12 MIPS with one of their chips. Of course you'd need to spend some time learning their instruction sets/learning how to code in C for them. There is a C compiler in the ports named avr-gcc to do just that. As for programmers, you can program these chips with a simple homebrew cable that plugs into your parallel port.
