I use my Canon PowerShot S110 (Digital Elph) with the Digikam application
and have no complaints at all.  The gphoto2 library it uses supports
Canon cameras very well, and you can't go wrong with this one if you
want something to carry around with you all the time without thinking
about the burden of carrying a camera!

It's been flawless to me for several years now.  The new one is really
awesome (http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/s500.html), but the
older ones have come down quite a bit in price (around $250 for the 3MP
ones).
