I don't know the answer to your question, but I would be surprised if
SMP FreeBSD ran on Compaq machines. Compaq, like the neighborhood
dog, is incapable of walking past a bush without pissing on it. As
a result, Compaq hardware is incompatible in many ways, down to
the smallest trivial detail. Even the power supply connectors are
nonstandard. Even the screws holding the case together are strange.
This was true years ago when I made the mistake of buying a Compaq
DeskPro 386/20, and it's been true ever since. Furthermore, Compaq
considers every little incompatibility to be valuable proprietary
information, which it will not release to anybody except Microsoft
and a few other big players. Basically, they want you to buy your
hardware from Compaq, your software from Compaq, your support from
Compaq, and your spare parts from Compaq. They don't want you to run
FreeBSD on their machines, and they won't give you the time of day if
you run into problems.
Just so you know what you're getting into.
