I have no idea, as the screen is recognizable as X artifacts at that point, and nothing else. I may compile the kernel with debugging and hook up a serial console if it bugs me too much, but for now, I just run X until I'm ready to shut the machine down and run a halt command in an xterm when it's time to pack up.
