I'm not going to try to put vi down, but you've got to admit that most
newbies find it less than intuitive.  Emacs has changed a lot since
people got fed up with its idiosyncracies; it now has mouse and cursor
key support, and is thus much closer to the editors in the Microsoft
world.  And nowadays you don't *have* to have your Emacs open all the
time.  For example, I'm writing this in an Emacs window which I opened
(from mutt) specially for that purpose.  On the other hand, you'll
find it convenient to have an editor window open somewhere once you
realise that you can comfortably edit 200 files at the same time.
It's like a notepad reminding you of what you're doing.

Agreed.  That's why I don't recommend jot, pico, ee or friends.  They
all do the job, but it's easy to run into their limitations, and
relearning any system component as central as an editor is a Real
Pain.
