But you were cautious enough not to do it ? :)

No, it has never been there ...

Since I was a long time user of Mush,
I prepared a port, but never commited
it, and switched over to Mutt long ago.

Well, Mutt tries to emulate most of the
features found in Mush, but seems to be
of better code quality. (One reason that
I gave up on Mush was its unreliability
with the "unlimited number of mails" patch.
Mutt never had a limit on the number of
mails ...)

You can have my Mush sources (though it
has been a long time since I last built
a binary from them), or even a binary,
if I manage to find it on an old backup :)

You may want to check out the web pages
at http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~me/mutt/ for a
list of features supported by Mutt. But
I already checked for the save options,
and "save by subject" is not there, as
of now ...

But there are a number of people actively
developing Mutt enhancements, and you may
be able to talk one of them into adding
that feature :)
