The install problem because smmsp is missing from group and passwd is one of them that is covered in /usr/src/UPDATING. A "make world" won't work because of this. I also strongly believe in the reboot to single user mode before the installworld. If the system hasn't been updated since 4.3, the installed ports are probably a year out of date.
