Could I suggest something along the lines of: "The grep variants prefixed with the letter 'z' perform like their plain counterparts, but on gzip-compressed archives." or "The grep, egrep and fgrep commands have gzip-aware forms (zgrep, zegrep and zfgrep respectively)." And in a (currently non-existent) NOTES section: "The zgrep.1 manual page is part of the gzip distribution."
