I had similar vinum panic experiences. What you have to do is use the
vinum-4.0-CURRENT version. Since I started using that version, my
vinum-related panics have gone away.

But Greg Lehey has always put up the disclaimer that vinum is still alpha
or beta... I can't see it on the page at the moment.
