I just upgraded from 4.2 to 4.5, and while running XFree86 4.1 (the one on CD), the initial startup messages can be seen, but after that, the display goes totally blank. No crosshatch is displayed (no wm/desktop installed). Even killing the server has no effect, the screen remains blank. I have to reboot for getting display back. Note that the system is _not_ hung, but still runs... just the display is blank. I compiled XFree86-4.2.0, and still the same problem occurs. I was using XFree86-4.0.1_8 on 4.2, and it worked fine, hence I assume that it is not a hardware problem. ps. please reply to me personally, i'm not subscribed to the list.
