You should uninstall teTeX, latex, texinfo, and any other tex-related ports. By installing latex you have trashed your teTeX installation. Reinstall teTeX. Proceed from there. Check the ports Makefiles. Do NOT install anything which has the old "tex" port as a dependency, since that will bring it in. Latex & texinfo and tex and metafont are all fully contained in the teTex port. Maybe it's time for there to be a warning added to these older ports.
