Well, if that had happened for one of the machines I administer, I would
take the first available of the following actions:

* sudo co /etc/rc.conf
  (That is, recover the file from the RCS repository. RCS is not only
  useful for tracking changes, but to help for situations like this.)

  (Actually, as time permits, I'm working on figuring out how to keep a
  private CVS repository for these things, which should be *very* nice,
  once I figure out how to do it. Unfortunately, time is scarce....)

* Restore the file(s) from the most recent appropriate backups (and
  tweak as necessary).

* Copy the file(s) from a similarly-configured machine (and tweak as
  necessary).

* Copy the file(s) from installation media (and tweak as necessary).

So... once you've got the files back, you might want to take steps so
you can do some of the earlier options in the above list. I heartily
recommend RCS; the price is right, and the discipline isn't too tough.
There were a couple of (consecutive) articles by the Jeffreys in recent
issues of _SunExpert_ about using RCS (especially from a sysadmin
perspective).
