I suggested this because I did this same thing not long ago. But it was not on a scsi drive. In the shell I went to /dev and just ran the sh MAKDEV wd1s1e (I think for my ide drive)... It made all the necessary files, but then it choked and said it could not find the chown program. I halted and rebooted anyway, but things seem to work fine. You might want to try a similar thing on your scsi drive. I don't think you need any special permissions to do that.
