I normally use FreeBSD myself (which is why I am asking you guys), but
some customers require Solaris or Tru64 to do the job, which is why I want
a tool either in a portable script language (perl for instance) or a piece
of portable C-code which compiles on a fair bit of the commercial UNIX
platforms (Solaris and Tru64 at least).

I obviously forgot to mention that, sorry.

I haven't tried pulling the 'file' utility out of the source
tree, but would that code work without modifications on another platform?
