Many programs with available source can be ported and compiled for use on FreeBSD. In addition, most Linux (a.out & ELF) and SCO binaries can be run directly under the appropriate emulators. Plus, programs with BSDi BSD/OS, NetBSD, and OpenBSD targets will compile under FreeBSD with little or no changes. If you are wondering if some program will work under FreeBSD, consult the FreeBSD Ports Tree at http://www.freebsd.org/ports, or ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports-xxxx where xxx is your version (2.2, current).
