I can extract the tar file on 9-STABLE, my locale settings are the defaults for root: # locale LANG= LC_CTYPE="C" LC_COLLATE="C" LC_TIME="C" LC_NUMERIC="C" LC_MONETARY="C" LC_MESSAGES="C" LC_ALL= Try unsetting LANG and LC_ALL. -Kimmo
