I tried changing the /etc/fstab to rw entry for this is:
/dev/ad0s1e         /var            ufs     rw              2       2
/dev/cd0c           /cdrom          cd9660  ro,noauto       0       0
proc                /proc           procfs  rw              0       0

doesn't make a differnece. I guess somehow the kde sound program is
conflicting with another program installed on my machine. 
I can play cd's with grip
I can't play cd tracks with xcdroast (it says another program is using
the /dev/dsp program)
I can't play cd's with either freeamp or kde cdplayer

sigh..
