You know about the "special request keys"? You can compile some special keys into the kernel which allow you to get some things done even after Oops or crash as long as the kernel itself can react on a quite low level I assume. Of course it will not be able to write that to a disk, but you can see the register dump on screen and can copy (part) of it down. See the Documentation folder of your kernel source.
