If you add WITH_MOZILLA=firefox to your /etc/make.conf file, then any browser ports that depend on mozilla like (on a GNOME system, anyway) galeon, epiphany, and yelp, will use firefox as their core instead. On the other hand, if you're running GNOME 2.12, you want to look under Desktop -> Preferences -> Preferred Applications.
