There are two questions here:  How you're going to connect the two
machines, and then the software you use to do the transfers.

Fastest is an ethernet connection (and maybe easiest, too) with
either crossover cable between the two computers, or a hub for more
than two computers with patch (cat 5) cable.  These cables are sold
at ordinary computer stores.  Then you can use ftp (in binary mode)
or, if both computers have it, rsync; and probably various others.

You can also do serial connections with a null-modem cable and, I
think, parallel port connections.  But ethernet is ultimately the
easiest and (if you're satisfied with 10mbs instead of 100mbs) not
terribly expensive.  It also gives you the experience of configuring
an internal network and figuring out how to let the internal machines
get to the Internet.
