I had a problem trying to log into my pop3 and I my ftp kept hanging. I was about to re-install everything when I tried to changed inetd.conf and grap some files. Sure enough after rebooting I was able to log into my mail server and able to ftp. I have the server set up from my home as a hobby and was trying to see if someone was loggin in. When I press last I get all the people who have logged in. Where is that file located? And if someone did manage to log in , it would show the IP address even if they managed to log in under root or one of my other users?
