This is possible too. After re-install FreeBSD from scratch with full sources should allow you to build the GENERIC kernel, but you must have the full sources from the cdrom or cvsup. You can get info on cvsup by search the freebsd.org website. If it is a hardware issue you have a bit of troubleshooting to do. It has been said many times that building your own kernel and the rest of the system from sources is a good test of your hardware. Perhaps you have found a hardware problem.
