No joy. On -stable someone else mentioned the same problem -- different problem than an obsolete pam.conf would generate -- and said he had to hack the code to get it to ignore the setcred problem. This only happens if you're using RSA authentication. When I remove the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file from the target server I can log in OK.
