I can't answer for the maintainer, and I don't have usage statistics, which you could probably obtain from the mailing list and WWW admins. But the fact that it works, without requiring a lot of resources or the need for extensive maintenance, and has the benefits that are clearly described in the Handbook, suggest that you should leave it alone. Why is this question even arising? Surely there are other problems that need to be addressed much more than the ending of a useful, uncontroversial service by someone who is not familiar with it? b.
