I did follow the wiki before writing:

atapicam_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf
hald_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf

and hald is running.

Plus the permissions are correct for cd0, xpt0 and pass0.

And I am running with the generic kernel.
