Check fetchmail.
The combo I use is fetchmail+pine
I looked at several GUI mail clients and they all fell short. Pine is far
from perfect and far behind my windows client, but so far it does most of
what I need (filter, support for multiple outgoing addresses.

The other good reason to consider this combo is that it is fairly easy.
Procmail may be more flexible/powerfull, but the one time I looked at it,
it didn't seem to be very friendly..
