Is this machine acting as a router/natd machine? Just a workstation on a LAN? Is there anything about your setup that you can think of that might be related to the problem? A bit more detail would be helpfull. Try using ctrl-alt-f1 (or more accurately, fx, where x is the tty# that you started XFree86 from) to check to see if there were any errors sent to stdout, before quiting X.
