Does/did the console output, dmesg -a, or less /var/log/messages show any
messages that might be relevant from the time frame? For example:

kernel: pid ???? (???), jid ??, uid ??, was killed: out of swap space
(Without at least 1 of the 2 below types of messages also appearing,
the "out of swap space" part of the message is normally a misnomer.)

swap_pager: out of swap space
swp_pager_getswapspace(???): failed


Another possibly of interest message, would be:

swap_pager: indefinite wait buffer: bufobj: ????, blkno: ????, size: ????


There could be others of interest.
