Switch to one of the text consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1 should do it), login to your account, and look at ~/.xsession-errors. This is a log file created by the xdm login process, and should tell you what the problem is. A likely candidate is trying to run a window manager that you haven't installed yet as the session manager.
