On one other FreeBSD box I logged into recently, in top I saw a process that was eating up 256Mb in "size", but with only a few hundred Kb in "res". Since the box has 16Mb ram + 64Mb swap I don't see how it could ever get those 256Mb, but there it was, grinning at me from ... the top. I guess that although Java apps under the Blackdown JDK say they need 80Mb, but don't really use that much under normal circumstances.
