this is a long standing known problem in gzip 1.2 which has been
solved in gzip 1.3. I'm currently making a port of gzip 1.3.3, so,
you can use --use-compress-program=/usr/local/bin/gzip until
gzip 1.3.3 is imported into -current or -stable.
