And this for additional information:

on this one specific machine I mentioned (dmesg output follows)
sshd kills itself after receiving signal HUP (killall -HUP sshd).
On all other machines this does not happen!

This machine is an SMP system, two 866 PIII, TYAN Thunder 2500
mainboard, 2 GB ECC Registered RAM, this is the head of the
kernel config:
