The new inexpensive platforms such as RaspberryPi,
BeagleBone, PandaBoard seem to be changing that.

How do we get more people excited about this?

I've considered writing up some of the specific tasks
I see[0] and posting them as Junior Kernel Hacker
projects on FreeBSD-hackers to get the attention
of a slightly larger audience.

[0] For example:  framebuffer/syscons on RPi,
convert BeagleBone MMCSD driver to use DMA,
processor idle halting.
