I'd say it's not entirely accurate fixing just the VCS name. Stable also includes minor bug fixes and new features. And it would be useful to define what "stable" actually means, a stable ABI. As a first pass: "Stable" is the branch where development continues after a RELEASE, including bug fixes and new features.
