Does the SB16 work in FreeBSD? I have SB16 PnP working fine on 2.1.5 - but I've never had any luck with Sportster modems (this is a general problem not BSD specific). Use the out of box setting on the SB16 PnP to recompile your kernel unless you know for sure that there is a conflict.
