Have you ``encrypted passwords = yes'' or so in your smb.conf?

You can also use Win95_PlainPassword.reg or so from samba distribution as in
latest FreeBSD ports collection.

You have to use smbpasswd for this, see /usr/local/share/doc/samba for details.
