I have a DPT SmartRAID IV card in my box. I've never had any problem, card just boots (4.2/4.3-STABLE). I would first get the card running under MS-DOS. You don't say what card it is, so I don't know if the card is supported by FreeBSD; it is possible that the current card setup is a problem. Does Mandrake actually run on it? There is also a freebsd-scsi mailing list. This is what I see: Apr 14 19:18:34 ct980320-b /kernel: dpt0: port 0xef20-0xef3f irq 5 at device 14.0 on pci0 Apr 14 19:18:34 ct980320-b /kernel: dpt0: DPT PM3334UDW FW Rev. 07L5, 3 channels, 64 CCBs I have 4 ST410800WD drives running off this controller.
