Have a look at: http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/handbook133.html Think on a component level, not a machine level. Almost any "generic" PC that you build up should work. The problem with (esp. Compaq) pre-configured servers is that they often use propriatary, non-standard NICs and/or SCSI host adapters. In general, most things should work, except maybe very new products.
