We can't not do things > because things might break. Sure, that's a great analysis IF there were a compelling reason to change it. I've yet to see anyone post anything other than, "Here's something we can fool around with." If you do come up with some reason that the name of the maintainer absolutely has to be in a makefile variable, put it in a new one, something like MAINTAINER_NAME or something so you don't break working code for no good reason.
