FYI,

     I just saw that a preliminary UDI spec (0.90) is available for
public review (UDI is the "Uniform Driver Interface", which should allow
for portable drivers across hardware *and* operating systems -- at the
source and not binary level).  I don't know if anyone here is following
it, but here it is:
