If it is just interpersonal email the answer is probably no.

Don't forget the mail archives...  html pollutes them pretty
badly, no?  If this practice becomes very widespread, I fear
that it will interfere with indexing the archives.

Even Netscape has an option to selectively send HTML mail to
recipients who can receive it.  I'd say the lists can't  :)
