(so has ttyx/ttyX, and originally /dev/cua* referred to a separate port on
 a modem that accepted control commands for the main port, but that's beside
 the point)

Then use that as the distinguishing feature, instead of the last two letters.

Doesn't matter that much to me. All I'm getting at is that the current
system is confusing.
