I believe this might be a problem mentioned in the XFree86 files. I think it's the "hibit_high", "hibit_low" problem. Look in /etc/XF86Config and look for a line containing "hibit". It's probably there, commented out. To know which one you need, I think you have to start X, quit X, and scroll back and see what the initial detection found the hibit in. You have to do this after a fresh boot (at least the first time X was started since a boot). Check the man pages for more info on hibit.
