For the present, having BOTH ports is the correct way to go. devel/gettext-old, 0.10.35, provides a libintl.so.1 which works with all the gettext consumers in the Ports collection. devel/gettext, 0.10.40, provides only binaries (unless you define WANT_FULL_GETTEXT, which is something that people should NOT generally do, unless they are testing a full upgrade to 0.10.40).. only binaries needed by the new GNOME and similar ports. devel/gettext, 0.10.40, does NOT provide libintl.so.1, so all applications that actually use the gettext internationalization need devel/gettext-old, 0.10.35, installed. At least, this is the situation for the present; I do not know exactly how portmgr and/or Ade Lovett intend to proceed.
