Eh?  No, DOS is not required.  A DOS boot floppy with FDISK on it is a
recommended backup step though.  You can install straight from the CDs.

Of course, you must have free partition space; FreeBSD requires it's own
slice and cannot install to NTFS or FAT or into any other partition except
it's own type.
