I wasn't very impressed with the performance of Samba on FreeBSD either,
until I found out about these changes to smb.conf:
add
socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=16384 SO_RCVBUF=16384
readsize = 16384
read prediction = true

to the [global] section of smb.conf.  Restart Samba, and I think you'll see a
big improvement.
